Evaluation - Q4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Software Used:
Photoshop - I used photoshop to edit and create my album cover. I found this program quite easy to use due to previous use.
Premiere Pro - We used premiere pro to edit our music video and vox pops together. I struggled a bit using this program but through time I learned more about it.
YouTube - I used this to upload and embed the videos onto my blog.
Microsoft Powerpoint - Used for some of my planning and research, such as: Locations, Narrative, etc.
www.video.online-convert.com/convert-to-mp4 - To convert our AVI files to MP4, it was very quick and easy to use.
Blogger - used to upload of of my blog work.
Hardware Used:
Mac - This was used to edit all of our work for our digipak.
Canon Digital Camera - We used this to take our pictures for our album covers and magazine advert. High quality and easy to use.
Sony HD Digital Video Camera - This camera was used to film our music video and vox pops. High quality and easy to use.
Studio Lighting - Used throughout filming and photoshoots to create natural/even lighting. Very easy to use.
Green Screen - Used to shoot part of our music video and photoshoot so we could add another background in whilst editing. It was easy to set up and take down and it fitted perfectly at the back of the classroom.
Tri-Pod - Used to hold up the camera whilst we were filming. It also allowed us to tilt and pan the camera when necessary.
Re-shooting?
The only re-shooting that our group did for our music video was the dancing scenes as we didn't think that it looked as professional the first as we filmed it in the school drama hall and the floor was all scuffed. We decided to reshoot it in the media classroom on the green screen so it looked neater, although we had to make sure that the dance didn't come off of the green screen as it would be out of the shot as the green screen was quite small compared to the dance.
Evaluation - Q3: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
From this audience feedback we have learnt that the ending of the video with the overlay was quite popular but the performance could be improved if we did it again, also the feedback stated that our chosen locations fitted well with our genre and that our video will appeal to our target audience.
Evaluation - Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Front Album Cover
Main Image
A medium close up of an over the shoulder shot, this shows the audience the artists face which makes her more recognisable. This shot is also very similar to other existing album covers as you can see the artists face really well and they are looking directly into the lens of the camera which is very conventional to R'n'B album covers as it directly addresses the audience.
Background
I chose to have the background very basic by using a skin/cream colour, this makes the main image of the artist stand out from the rest of the album cover. This is conventional to R'n'B style of album covers as they always want the main image to be the main attraction.
Artists Name
In 'Zaphfino' font to make it look fancy and to attract the target audience, as they are mainly teenage girls who like fancy fonts. I chose to use the colour black for the artists name as it stands out against the background and matches the outfit the artist is wearing, although the font is quite small the colour makes it stand out.
Album Name
I also used 'Zaphfino' font for the album name as I did on the artists name, I made the font on this bigger as it is an important part of the album cover so it needs to stand out. I made this font have a leopard print pattern so it fits in with the whole digipak and music video as leopard print is featured a lot throughout.

Back Album Cover
Main Image
I chose to use this image from our second photo shoot, I chose this image as the leopard print dress fits in with our colour scheme and features in our music video and digipak. I used this medium close up of the the artist as it is very conventional and is as if 'Amelia' is looking directly at the audience and the audience would easily recognise her. I believe that this image gives the album cover a sophisticated look.
Artist Name
Again, the font is 'Zaphfino' which creates synergy between the entire digipak. Black font was used to make it stand out and it shows the audience that the name is important. Having the artist name on the back cover is conventional.
Track List
Again, the font is 'Zaphfino' this continues the cross media synergy. Again I used black font to make the track names stand out from the cream background. We put the track list at the side of the back cover as they do on most album covers, therefore our album back cover follows the usual genre conventions well.
Production Company Logo
This is usually in the corner close to the barcode and is generally very small. The logo allows the company to be more recognised for the artist which they produce.
Artist Website Address
This is very conventional on a back album cover in all genres as the target audience have somewhere to find out more about the artist. A smaller and different font was used to make it stand out from everything else.
Copyrights
Usually in the bottom corner near the barcode. In a really small and different font so that the audience know that it is not completely related to the album but it is still important and noticeable.
Barcode
All albums have a barcode on the back cover. To make sure I follow the conventions I placed mine in the bottom right hand corner, another reason that I put it here is so that it is not in the way of the main image.

Magazine Advert
Main Image & Text Reflection
This links with the name of our album as it is 'Reflection'. We think that the water effects on the picture make the advert look more elegant and sophisticated.
Main Image
A medium shot showing 'Amelia', our artist. This shot shows her face really clearly which means the audience can easily recognise the artist.
Thumbnail Images of the 4 Available Covers
This allows the audience to view the four different interchangeable album front covers available as our USP (Unique Selling Point). The reflection effect links with the album name.
Artist and Album Name
Located at the top which makes it easy for the reader to notice. This shows who the artist being advertised is. Both of the names are in similar fonts to the ones used on the rest of the digipak but are a different colour to make them stand out from the rest of the advert.
QR Code
This is an electronic barcode which people with smart phones can scan and they will get taken straight to the website or music video. We chose to use this as they are very conventional and popular on modern adverts.
'Now on iTunes'
Shows where the album is available to purchase. This is very conventional of most adverts.

Music Video Analysis - One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful
Cinematography
Establishing shot to show a beach at sunrise. We learn that this will be the main location for the majority of the video. We then get a fast paced cut to a close up on a hand tapping along to the beat of the song whilst the beach fades away. Then we are shown a long crane shot of the band, One Direction, throwing stones into the sea by a parked VW camper van. Then we are given a tracking ariel shot of the cliff side, still establishing the location of the video. The band is then shown through a long shot walking along the beach in which we saw at the beginning of the video. We then begin to get medium close ups of band members singing the lyrics. This allows us as the audience to understand who is singing and to begin to acknowledge who is who. We are then shown tracking shots of the camper van driving along the cliff side that indicates the band are going to the beach. These shots are also extreme long shots, still establishing the location. Throughout the video we continue to get these shots of the car. We also continue to get the medium close ups of the band members singing the lyrics. Another shot we get is medium long shots of the band members ‘dancing’ on the beach whilst singing. This is very conventional of a pop music video. All shots are fast paced to stick to the tempo and beat of the song. We also see a medium long shot of a girl, flicking her hair, which links and is in time to the lyrics. Not only are we shown shots of the van, but we also see tracking long shots of a VW beetle with girls in. We presume they are also going to the same beach. Later on we begin to get low angle long shots of the band on a balcony. This could indicate some power. We also get panning shots and low angle shot whilst they are walking on the beach singing. In the middle of the video we are shown a low angle panning shot of both cars parked side by side and the people in them have met. The low angle on all of them indicates they are now all on the same level of power.
Editing
In the establishing shot, the directors name is placed in the bottom left corner. The shot also looks as though the effect of ‘sepia’ /black and white has been edited in to create an effect of sunrise. Straight away the cuts are of a fast pace which stick to the tempo and beat of the song. This is the same throughout the video however, when the song slows down slightly, the pacing of the cuts also slows. Cross fade transitions are also used throughout the video to move from different cuts. This is very popular within pop music videos and it follows the main conventions. Towards the end of the video, there is an edit of 2 scenes overlapping with them both slightly faded. This can represent parallel narratives.
Sound
At the beginning of the video you hear the sound of the sea, wind and birds; this tells you what type of location they are at. Throughout the rest of the video the only sound used is the song 'What Makes You Beautiful'.
Mise-en-Scene
Location/s:
The main location for this video is on a sandy beach with a beach hut/house. This is a very conventional location for pop videos as it’s seen as fun, glamorous, relaxing and it creates a sense of the summer holidays. For most of the video, we see the band in this location and in the sea. This could attract the target audience of teenage girls as the location and the song has ‘Grease’ inspiration of the same beat, similar beach and similar scenes, for example, the kiss between the girl and boy. Another location of the video is on a road on the cliff side in which we see the band and the girls driving down. We understand they are both heading to the same place as they are travelling down the same road and in the same direction. The location is quite summery and relaxing, which would attract their target audience as it can be seen as romantic.
Costume:
Costume:
The band is dressed in fashionable spring/summer clothes, which are suitable for the theme and location of the video. They are all also dressed similarly as they are wearing similar colours and shoes which is very typical for a boy band. However, they still have their own recognisable styles such as their hair. This allows the audience and fans to recognise them individually. The girls are also dressed in a fashionable style; however they are a lot more summery than the boys. They are wearing shorts, hats and sandals which the fans can relate to easily as they are simple yet fashionable items. At the end of the video, everyone is wearing jumpers, which shows that the day is ending as the characters are getting cold.
Props:
Props:
The main props in the video are; the VW camper van, which is bright orange which links to the summery, beach theme and the old blue VW Beetle which also links to the theme as it is very girly and summery, yet is also very 1950s, which links to the ‘Grease’ theme. The cars can also represent freedom for the teens. Other props include a football, acoustic guitar and deck chairs which indicate that they would be going to the beach. The guitar is used for singing around the camp fire at the end of the video, which is quite conventional. The girls also have straw beach bags, hats and sunglasses, which indicates they’ll be going to the beach. There are also sparklers and a campfire towards the end which fade behind other scenes, which could represent a ‘spark’ between relationships.
Lighting:
Lighting:
Most of the lighting in this video is natural sunlight as the majority of the video is on a beach. However, in one part of the video the camera and characters are placed so that the sun shines directly into the camera to give a glare. This makes a more romantic setting. Towards the end of the video, the setting becomes dark so soft lighting is used so we can see what is happening. We also get light from the camp fire and the sparklers.
